happy monday munchies! homemade sweet potato gnocchi in a brown butter & sage sauce.
i made a ton of sweet potato gnocchi for a dinner date a couple weeks ago. looking back, i shouldn’t have gone through all that effort for one person, but hindsight is always 20/20. we’ve all been there, right girls? but, a couple weeks later, when i’m all alone and looking to have a badass dinner by myself, i’m pretty excited to see a serving of frozen gnocchi’s waiting to be consumed. i’m glad i made these for myself.
i doubled this recipe but oh my gosh the flour was not accurate. i kept adding so much flour just to be able to form a dough, and then to roll it out…my oh my. have enough on hand. really make sure to get your sweet potatoes mashed smoothly. i found chunks of sweet potato in my gnocchi and pulled out a lot when i was forming the shape.
in a separate pan, while these guys are boiling, add a couple tablespoons of butter (your call) with a tablespoon or 2 of fresh, minced sage and garlic. (optional but highly encouraged: diced pancetta. omg) when the gnocchi float, strain them out and add to the butter & herb mixture. let them get a teeny bit crispy, plate, serve & consume. you’re welcome. amazing.
make a lot and freeze them! you won’t regret it! i love these SO MUCH! fresh pasta tastes like love. i swear. if you’re not in love with anyone, eating these will make you feel like you are. that was pathetic. okay, make these. enjoy!
happy sunday style and happy belated halloween! BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN.
halloween is a great holiday and this year was especially great. i attended the wework halloween party featuring my good friends, great caesar. a week ago, though, i attended the cure thrift shop halloween party with my lovely macy smith. the photo on the left is my full bride of frankenstein attire for cure, while the photo on the right was mid-party with great caesar’s manager, karen. she looked incredible! im wearing 2 dresses fom american apparel and my hair is up so high thanks to a 1 liter bottle of soda (tutorial here!)
it was a very fun, very late halloween night and now i know the true meaning behind november 1, the day of the dead. ugh.
happy monday munchies! homemade ramen
so, i was out with some friends the other day and it was pretty chilly out. “is there a place near here to get pho/ramen?” adam asked. “sure, i replied, but why don’t we just go back to my place and make our own”. boom. turns out adam is a poached egg master, and i’m pretty good at cooking. easy and delicious meal for all of us to enjoy. we hit a bodega and picked up a couple packs of ramen, discarding the flavor/sodium packet. i halved a bunch of cherry tomatoes, sliced an onion, minced a couple cloves of garlic and diced some carrots. all of those vegetables went into a large pot with a chicken bouillon cube, a couple tablespoons of general tsao sauce and one tablespoon of soy sauce. when that broth was happy and the vegetables were cooked, we added the ramen noodles.
separately, in a medium sized pot we added a lot of water and a couple tablespoons of white vinegar. when it was boiling adam created a whirlpool effect and cracked an egg directly into the water. he left the egg to congeal and poach on itself for a minute or two and put it in a separate bowl.
when we were ready to plate (bowl?) i placed an egg on top and drizzled with some sriracha sauce. i use this stuff on everything i eat. i love it.
warmed our hearts and our wallets. this would have cost us like, $12 down the street, but we paid about….85 cents a serving. not bad.
Happy Sunday Style! Tis The Season…
yesterday i decided to go a little goth. i always wear black, but yesterday i made my black outfit a little darker by wearing my shredded black tights & doc martens with my favorite black circle skirt to the Fort Greene dog costume contest. yes, you read that right. i go every year because i love dogs and i want one so bad. anyways, on top i wore a striped dress/shirt (with built in underwires!) from american apparel, my favorite gap kids sequin cardigan and my top shop leather jacket. pretty sure my black bandana is from a dollar store. classy. to top it off, i broke out my favorite fall lipstick—smoked purple by mac. it’s the perfect shade of black/purple. i love it. have a spooky week!
thanks for snapping these, mike.
happy thrifty thursday! the sale at juliemollo.com is still going on!
happy waistline wednesday!
okay. so, yesterday i taught you how to do your hair like this. i think i look okay in these photos. healthy, happy, etc. now, i woke up feeling like total shi* the morning i took these pictures. cancelled my lunch & dinner plans, ate cough drops and soup for breakfast and so on and so on.
i am convinced that getting yourself up and ready with a cute outfit and makeup has so much to do with healing. staying in your PJs and laying on the couch will keep you sick! get up, get dressed, put your face on and go about your routine while healing with whatever food/drink/medicine you take. looking and feeling like yourself will help in a faster recovery. mental health and physical health go hand in hand. happy sick season. stay cute!
happy tutorial tuesday! how i get my crazy bun/bouffant/janelle monae.
a step by step instruction that works best with long hair. if you can’t get your hair to pile up on the tippy top of your head then this probably won’t work for you. also, if you can’t pull off looking like a lunatic this probably isn’t for you either. if you can, it’s easy peasy and works best with day or two old hair. clean hair usually needs some spray. 2 bobby pins may be used to tame fly aways when pressing down your bun. i finish with some brocato maximum hold hairspray because sam brocato is the man.
i started doing this on accident. my bun got so big that it started flopping forward. if you’ve got it, flaunt it. i didn’t want to cut my hair so i just worked around what it wanted to naturally do.
disclaimer. my hair does whatever i want it to. some of this might be easier for me because of that. if you have slippery, pin straight hair, this is going to look much different. my hair is coarse, thick, dirty, curly and wild. i love it.
happy monday munchies! pumpkin lentil soup in pretzel bread bowls!
yesterday katrina & i had our annual pumpkin carving ‘party’ and hosted dinner afterwards. i cooked for her, her man & their manager and kept it in theme with the carving—pumpkin lentil soup in pretzel bread bowls. i love making pretzels, so when i saw pretzel bread bowls on ABM i was VERY excited. i filled the bowls with pumpkin lentil soup, which is my favorite soup to make.
i’m cheating a little and linking the recipes a little, but let me tell you a couple things i would change:
the pretzel recipe i used for my soft baked pretzels was a much better dough recipe than the one i used off ABM. it was still a delicious bread bowl. pretzel dough >everything. everytime. but something about the dough did not rise as much as the previous recipe. im not the best baker, but anytime i use my kitchen aid to make dough is usually pretty kick ass. the recipe from ABM also says it makes 8. that’s a lie. i made 4. now, maybe my dough was too dense, and thats why, but i remember the original pretzel dough recipe being twice the size. i also wish i coated my dough with egg before baking, not butter.
if you have a favorite pretzel recipe use it the next time you make soup to create a super exciting dinner experience! bread bowls are impressive! it’ll be like panera catered dinner…only it’s homemade with so much love. if you’re not cooking with love then you shouldn’t be cooking.
i woke up feeling a little under the weather and i am so happy that i have so much leftover, delicious soup in my fridge. yay! can & freeze to keep fresh longer!
